FAQ

Where are your drum studios located?

We provide drum lessons in both London and Southampton. Our East London drum studios are based near Cambridge Heath and Bethnal Green stations, on the border of Hackney and Tower Hamlets. Our Southampton drum studio is based near Woolston train station. You can find the contact/location details for all our studios at the bottom of this page.

How much do your drum lessons cost?

Our London drum lessons are priced at £28 for a half hour lesson and £47 for a full hour lesson. We also provide cheaper lesson rates (£26 per half hour and £45 per full hour) if you purchase a block of four lessons at £104 and £180 respectively.

Our Southampton drum lessons are priced at £23 for a half hour lesson and £34 for a full hour lesson. We also provide cheaper lesson rates (£21 per half hour and £32 per full hour) if you purchase a block of four lessons at £84 and £128 respectively.

Do you offer free or discounted drum lessons?

Yes, we offer a free 30 minute taster lesson which gives you the opportunity to visit our studios and meet us before committing, as well as discounted drum lesson blocks mentioned in the section above or on our pricing page.

I’ve heard you guys offer the cheapest drum lessons around, is that correct?

To the best of our knowledge, yes! We constantly gauge ourselves against our competition to make sure that we offer the best value tuition in London and Southampton. And importantly, we try to keep our prices as affordable as possible so that our drum lessons are as accessible as possible. In our research we also found it hard to find the prices for most other drum schools online, so that’s why we display them proudly on our website, as transparently as we can.

What are your opening times?

We run our London drum classes weekdays from about 3pm-9pm, as well as a half day on Saturday – roughly 10am-2pm. Our Southampton studios open slightly earlier, from 2pm on weekdays.

How do I book a lesson at BANG?

Simply email or ring us at the desired studio location using the details found at the bottom of this page.

What can I expect in the taster session?

Our tasters give you the opportunity to see our studios, chat to us and see how we do it here down at BANG. We’ll introduce ourselves and the business, discuss your wants/needs/direction and then get you on the kit. And if all goes well, potentially even getting you playing along to a song!

Do you offer drum lessons for children? Or is it just adult lessons?

We provide drum lessons for both adults and children. We don’t have an upper age limit and no specific minimum age (as everyone is different and there are always exceptions to the rule), however we generally find that children below the age of 7 struggle with the coordinational demands that drumming requires. Plus, being any younger usually means they can’t fit on our drum kits!

Do you teach beginners at BANG? Or do you need to have some experience?

We teach all abilities here at BANG. We provide beginner, intermediate and advanced drum lessons, so no need to worry if you’ve never played before or if you’ve been playing for 20 years!

Do you teach students with Special Educational Needs?

Yes we do. We have a wealth of experience providing drum lessons for SEN students (with one of our longest running students being a great example) and will always try our best to be as accommodating as possible for anyone that requires additional help.

How are the lessons structured?

After assessing the student’s level, we establish their goals/what they’d like to achieve from the lessons. We then set about approaching these goals by breaking them down into their simplest formats, getting a broad understanding of the fundamentals, and then narrowing the focus of the lessons to reach the desired levels. This process is attained through using a mixture of our many years of teaching experience and a wealth of great materials. We then apply what we’ve learnt to songs to keep it engaging and fun.

What do we cover in the lessons?

We cover everything that’s listed on our home page plus plenty more, and we try to focus on your goals and your aspirations instead of sticking to a rigid program (which we can do if you’d like to do it that way). Areas covered, but not limited to, include:

  • All aspects of technique
  • Groove building
  • Musical understanding
  • Rudiments & various patterns/chops
  • Genre & stylistic playing
  • Timing and feel
  • Reading and writing music
  • Music theory
  • Maintenance and tuning

Do we play along to songs?

Of course! We believe the best, most applied and most enjoyable way of learning the drums is to use songs as much as possible. So not only do we play along to all manner of songs, but we have also carefully linked our teaching materials to our extensive song and groove library.

Do you teach drum grades?

Yes, we teach drum grades (but it’s certainly not mandatory). We use both of the big exam boards – Rockschool (RSL) and Trinity – and have recently been contacted by ABRSM, so may have a third set of grades to offer soon.

I want to learn a particular genre/song/technique. Can you help?

We certainly can. Bring anything you want in and we’ll help you learn it. Just try not to be disappointed if you’ve only been playing for a week and we can’t get you playing that progressive metal tune straight away!

Do you provide one-to-one or group lessons?

We only provide one-to-one lessons, as we have found this to be the most effective way of learning and means all lessons can be individually tailored. For what we charge we feel it would be unfair if the sole focus of the tutor wasn’t on a single student, working around their needs. This also helps negate the problem of one student advancing quicker than the other.

Do you provide online drum lessons as well as in person lessons?

We only provide face to face lessons. That way we can ensure the student has the best equipment/materials available as well as being in the best possible environment to learn.

Would I study on an acoustic drumkit or an electronic drumkit?

As much as electronic kits have come along, they’ll never be quite as good as acoustic kits. All our studios are fitted out with two acoustic kits (one for the student, one for the tutor) so not only will you be playing on a top end acoustic every time you come in for a lesson, but you’ll be on your own drumkit for the full length of the lesson as well.

Do I need to bring anything?

No need to worry about bringing anything for your taster, we have everything we need at our studios. However, if you join us for lessons afterwards then we do insist that you have a pair of drumsticks. Can’t be a drummer without drumsticks!

Do I need my own drumkit?

No you don’t, and we wouldn’t suggest getting one if you’ve just got started either! There’s plenty of different practice options available that we’ll happily discuss with you in class, so you don’t need to worry if you don’t have the equipment just yet.

Is there a place where I can wait for my child/partner?

Yes, we have waiting rooms with comfy sofas available in both our East London and Southampton studios.

Do you offer gift vouchers?

We offer all the lesson options on our pricing page out as vouchers. To book is easy, you’d just need to pay for the lesson(s) and as soon as we have received payment we’ll send out a personalised voucher to yourself in .pdf format. Then simply print it off, give it as a gift and the recipient can contact us when they’d like to go about arranging the lesson(s) for a time that suits them (subject to availability). Please note – vouchers expire one year from issue date.

Where are the best drum lessons in London or Southampton?

Here of course! Our unique approach has seen us grow from a small, one room drum school into a multi studio, national drum institute with over 150 active students, some of which have been studying with us for over 10 years! We’ve been an established part of East London for 15 years now and are the best/most well reviewed out of all the drum schools in London, with top tier equipment and the highest quality of tuition available.
